Little ole Edie Beale never ceases to inspire and amuse. You cannot do the head scarf and the black-tights-I’m-not-wearing-pants look without admitting your source. (If you have not seen Grey Gardens, put it on your Netflix queue right now!). I am happy to see Stefano Pilati going back to the classic in this collection, although the all gray and black palette makes me think of the winter that I want to end right now. A little color for the cold weather doesn’t hurt anyone. I appreciate the not so tight silhouette for us regular women who weigh in the 3 digits, but some pieces like the knotted fur, although interesting, is so bulky! I can’t imagine not looking like you’re wearing a sleeping bag in it. The bag collection is also very classic and I am in love with the bare detail croc in the most ladylike shape. The leather collection is shown open on the runway but on the streets, the simple classic will be neatly tucked away on the arms of uptown ladies.

Sometime we forget the luxury of a well made timeless, simple classic from a designer we know and trust. We are always looking for new designers but the tried and true will always hold that special place in our hearts and that is why this bag makes me feel so good. This is your classic tote that will stay with you for years and as a summer piece will carry you through thick and thin. We love the Y collection especially the ingenious reversible tote (I love it in purple – a must have!!) because the “Y” is brilliantly incorporated in the design as a nice detail rather than an obnoxious billboard. There are so many fine structural details on this bag that may be overlooked, like the way the gusset comes together, the way the corners are darted and sewn perfectly neatly, that makes this bag an obvious luxury item. I am obviously trying to convince myself that this is a great addition to my collection and being that it is available at Bluefly for only $956 makes it that much harder to pass up. I mean, it was originally $1195 and it’s still early in the season so I will still get a lot of use out of it. I am so happy Fall bags are arriving!! Yes, it is the ultimate conflict, buy sales or get the latest? Well, here is a bag that is going to make that choice very difficult. There was the Downtown so of course we would expect to get an Uptown bag from YSL. I absolutely love this bag. It is for the uptown lady who is a little bit naughty, very sexy!! It’s perfect in patent for that bit of edge and of course the Navy is so dreamy (also come in black but it’s so blah, but Bergdorf’s has it in Red Grape which is nice). The Tribute tote bag from YSL is seeing a lot of press lately on the arm of Ashley Simpson which has instantly propelled it to a must have ‘it’ bag for 20 somethings who long for a piece of the glamour life they imagine these girls to have. “It” or not, this bag is rockin’ it for me! I am not a fan of stamped croc but I love a cheeky leather ”quilted” croc! The quilted scales on the YSL Tribute are large and exaggerated, which is quirky and super cute. YSL Faubourg Tote

Stefano Pilati can do no wrong in our eyes. From shoes to ready to wear and of course bags, he has brought new life to YSL by turning to the classic aesthetics favored by Yves himself. He’s wowed us with hit bag after hit bag since he took over (yes, in addition to the RTW, he’s even found time to design the handbags, something most designers do not do) and his plethora of platform shoes and boots have the sleek and chic tripping over themselves each season, literally. So imagine my disappointment when I came across this frumpy lump of a bag. I know it’s too much to ask from one person to never fail but this is a huge departure from the YSL bags of past seasons. There is nothing about the Faubourg tote that appeals to me; the drawstring gold chain with lock looks cumbersome, the handles are set too close together to be of use and that shade of navy reminds me of frumpy schoolmarms. Now you know I love navy but in patent or in a brighter shade, not this muted drab version. Maybe it’s because I am way on the other side of 30 and can no longer see the edgy hipness of carrying around an old lady bag for fear I have become an actual old lady myself. So my advice to anyone over 25 is to stick with the Muse, the Downtown, the Rive Gauche, or the latest Uptown Bag.
